Thanks to the thematic objectives, institutions can assess their current situation and define their own specific measures.

to develop and implement their action plan.

The actions suggested below will help you discover the measures that may already be in place.

Based on this assessment, institutions can define their own action plan to achieve customised objectives.

for year 1, year 3 and year 5 of their climate journey.

SOLUTIONS TO REDUCE EMISSIONS

Implementing incentives to promote sustainable mobility

Business travel, particularly air travel, is one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions for the institutions of International Geneva. Consequently, adopting a sustainable business travel policy is essential to reducing the carbon footprint whilst maintaining the institutions’ operational efficiency.

A clear and consistent business travel policy can change employees’ habits by promoting more environmentally friendly alternatives. Active involvement from senior management and raising awareness amongst all staff are essential to successfully implementing this transition.

To achieve this, clear guidelines must be established, setting out measurable targets for reducing CO₂ emissions, whether by choosing more sustainable modes of transport or by limiting travel. Each journey must be carefully assessed to determine whether it is truly necessary or whether it can be replaced by a virtual meeting.

  • Establishing a sustainable business travel policy
  • Set specific objectives for participation in external online meetings
  • Set specific targets for reducing CO₂ emissions from air travel
  • Make the train the compulsory mode of transport for short- and medium-distance journeys
  • Prioritise direct flights and the airlines with the lowest CO₂ emissions
  • Make Economy / Economy Plus the compulsory class of travel for air travel
  • Ban flights between Swiss cities, including connecting flights
  • Restrict the use of private vehicles for business travel to exceptional circumstances
  • Moving towards a low-carbon vehicle fleet
  • Set specific objectives for organising international meetings online rather than in person
  • Set an internal contribution to a climate and sustainability fund for air travel

Incentives to encourage the use of transport modes other than private cars must be introduced in such a way that a willingness to change can be fostered gradually and in an appealing manner. It is important to treat all modes of transport on an equal footing. It is therefore good practice to provide a contribution towards transport costs – if possible, equivalent to (at least) the cost of the parking space paid for by the company – to all employees who do not request a parking space. The aim is, on the one hand, to avoid providing free parking spaces and, on the other hand, to reward employees keen to adopt sustainable mobility and to make it easier for them to do so.

    • Occasional autonomous driving

Adopting parking management systems that promote sustainable mobility

In order to optimise car park management within an organisation, the aim here is to regulate access to the car park so that available spaces are allocated according to personal and/or professional criteria, thereby ensuring access for those who need it most. Furthermore, occasional parking is offered to people who do not have permanent access to the car park, in order to allow for flexibility in travel arrangements and to ensure the car park is fully utilised.

As well as establishing criteria for allocating parking spaces, charging is also a way of influencing commuter travel (when a free parking space is available, 45 per cent of workers use their own cars, a figure that falls to just 33 per cent when a charge is applied).

  • Set parking charges
  • Provide priority parking for carpoolers
  • Establish eligibility and exclusion criteria
  • Providing flexible, on-demand parking
  • To allow occasional, unlimited free parking for carpoolers per journey

Providing innovative solutions for sustainable mobility

The full involvement of staff is key to achieving sustainable mobility. It is therefore essential to organise and implement active communication.

  • Communicate internal and external results (and future objectives)
  • Sharing best practice in mobility management
  • Raising awareness of the challenges of sustainable mobility
  • Raising awareness of the environmental impact of transport
  • Encouraging the shift towards alternative modes of transport
