Waste Management

Let’s put the 3 Rs into practice

Our consumption patterns generate large quantities of waste every year, some of which could be avoided. By Reducing waste at source, Reusing more and Recycling properly, we can conserve natural resources, limit pollution and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

Globally

By 2050, global municipal solid waste generation will rise from 2 to 3.4 billion tonnes, according to a World Bank report.

At a local level

In Geneva, each resident generates around 529 kg of municipal waste per year, of which 369 kg comes from households (2022 figures). The target is to reduce household waste by around 25 per cent by 2025.

DID YOU KNOW?

Whilst it may not be perfect, recycling does help to reduce the use of raw materials. In Switzerland, 84 per cent of PET bottles are recycled, thanks to 70,000 collection points. 1.3 billion bottles are recycled each year in Switzerland.

3 KEY RECOMMENDATIONS

Every item we reuse, repair or recycle helps to conserve resources and reduce waste. A few simple actions can make a real difference in our daily lives.

1. Sort and dispose of waste properly

In Geneva, glass, paper, cardboard, aluminium, PET and bio-waste are recycled, whilst non-recyclable waste is sent to local disposal facilities. Effective sorting helps to maximise recycling and reduce material loss.

2. Reducing waste at source

Opt for water bottles, reusable bags, bulk containers and products with minimal packaging. Less waste at source means less incineration and less pollution.

3. Donate, repair or buy second-hand

Before throwing something away, consider repairing it, selling it or giving it away. Extending the life of objects helps to save raw materials and energy, and reduces waste.
