Visit of Verbois Dam and Solar III solar plant

Tuesday 15.10.2024, 15:30-17:00

2050Today, in cooperation with SIG and TPG, organizes a visit of the Verbois Dam and adjacent Solar III solar plant. The site, operated by SIG, is Canton Geneva’s largest source of electrical energy production.

Inaugurated in 1944, the Verbois site includes the dam with four passes, the plant equipped with four Kaplan turbines and two lateral dikes. The dam is operated on a run-of-river basis. Modulating the flow of the Rhône at the Seujet dam allows the Verbois plant to produce electricity during peak consumption hours.

With 20 meters of gross head (difference in water level between the top and bottom of the dam), Verbois dam’s power capacity is 100MW and annual production is 466GWh. It is Geneva’s principal hydroelectric structure, covering 15% of local consumption.

The Verbois dam is equipped with a fish pass to allow fish to cross the obstacle represented by the structure. The pass is made up of small stepped pools that allow fish to swim upstream along the dam.

Solar III, for its part, was the largest solar power plant in Switzerland when it was commissioned in 2005. It was installed on a plot of land freed up following the renewal of the Verbois dam’s electrical transformer station. When integrating it into the site, SIG ensured that special areas were created to preserve the local flora and fauna.

The 6000 solar panels occupy a ground surface of 16’000 m2 (equivalent to more than two football fields). Its total power capacity is 1MW, and produces 1GWh per year, covering the consumption of 300 Geneva households.
