Energy

Let’s use energy wisely

Our homes and buildings require energy for heating, hot water, lighting and the operation of various appliances. This energy consumption accounts for a significant proportion of greenhouse gas emissions. By adopting more energy-efficient habits and improving the energy efficiency of our buildings, we can help reduce our impact on the climate whilst cutting our energy costs.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

Globally

Buildings account for around 30 per cent of global energy demand and are expected to account for around 20 per cent of the growth in total demand between 2019 and 2024.

At a local level

Emissions linked to heat and electricity consumption account for around 20 per cent of Geneva’s total carbon footprint and 60 per cent of direct emissions. Reducing these emissions is therefore a key element in the decarbonisation of our region.

DID YOU KNOW?

Even when on standby, some appliances continue to use a lot of electricity: depending on the type of appliance, standby consumption can account for between 5 per cent and 80 per cent of total consumption. For example, a coffee machine on standby can use up to 50 per cent of its total energy consumption.

3 KEY RECOMMENDATIONS

Reducing your individual energy consumption doesn’t require any major changes. With a few simple steps and good daily habits, we can reduce our impact on the climate whilst cutting our energy bills.

1. Switch off devices in standby mode

Appliances left on standby continue to use electricity unnecessarily. Unplug appliances rather than leaving them on standby, or use a power strip with a switch.

2. Making the most of household appliances

Put lids on saucepans, only run the dishwasher and washing machine when they are full, wash your laundry at a low temperature (30 or 40°C) and avoid overheating your home. These are all simple steps that reduce energy consumption.

3. Use energy-efficient equipment

Opt for LED bulbs and energy-efficient appliances.
