Visit of the Cheneviers incineration plant

Tuesday 04.11.2025, 15:00-16:30

2050Today, in cooperation with SIG and TPG, organizes a visit of the Cheneviers incineration plant, which processes and recycles urban, agricultural, industrial and special waste in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. It is the third largest electricity producer in the canton.

Key figures:

  • 228,000 tons of waste processed annually
  • 89 employees (full-time equivalent)
  • 90,000 MWh of electricity generated each year
  • 259,000 MWh of thermal energy converted into district heating each year
  • 1/3 of waste transported by river

The first Cheneviers incineration plant was inaugurated in 1966. The current factory dates back to 1993. It produces electricity and district heating, which is operated by CADIOM, a company 51% owned by SIG. Cheneviers is TÜV-certified in the areas of quality (ISO 9001), environment (ISO 14001), and health and safety (OHSAS 18001).

SIG have been commissioned by the Canton to build a new, state-of-the-art incineration plant by 2029, resized to meet the canton’s needs. Cheneviers IV will produce the same amount of energy with less waste.

More information about the Cheneviers plant on the SIG website.

To spark your interest to join the visit, we recommend watching these two short videos (in French) — one takes you through the journey of waste, and the other dives into the world of a chemical engineer at the plant.
