Project NetZeroEvent

Reducing the environmental impact of travel related to international events and conferences in Geneva

NetZeroEvent: Measuring and reducing the impact of mobility

Mobility accounts for a significant proportion of the total greenhouse gas emissions of International Geneva, as shown by the periodic carbon assessments carried out by 2050Today among its members. In addition to commuting, air travel accounts for a significant proportion of these emissions. However, the real impact of mobility remains difficult to assess: the carbon footprint associated with the travel of participants at international conferences and events held in Geneva is still insufficiently documented due to a lack of data.

The NetZeroEvent project aims to transform the way international conferences and events are organised in Geneva by analysing and reducing the environmental impact of the mobility associated with them, in particular that of participants’ travel.

The NetZeroEvent project approach

In collaboration with event organisers, the project collects data from participants registered for a selection of events and conferences via an anonymous questionnaire. Combined with information on the geographical origin of participants, this data can be used to estimate the carbon emissions generated by their travel. The results are then extrapolated to the entire event.

Several categories and sizes of events are included in the project: academic conferences organised by the University of Geneva, professional conferences supported by Geneva Tourism, as well as events and conferences held by multilateral institutions based in Geneva. The number of participants considered varies from around 50 to several thousand.

The NetZeroEvent project also examines how events are designed (format, types of exchanges, target audiences) as well as the regulatory frameworks related to mobility that influence them.

Based on the data and lessons learned, the project will formulate recommendations to reduce the carbon footprint of international conferences in Geneva.

The project will run from 2025 to early 2027. Data collection is scheduled for 2026, and recommendations will be formulated by the end of 2026.
