Footprint and emissions by scope

2050Today’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions measurement methodology follows the GHG Protocol. The Protocol provides standards and guidance for organizations to measure and manage climate-warming emissions. It was created in 1998 through a partnership between the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

According to the GHG Protocol, the distribution of emissions is done by scopes:

Scope 1 represents direct emissions linked to the consumption of fossil fuels.

Scope 2 represents indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling consumed by the reporting company.

Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain (i.e. purchased good or services, business travel, employee commuting).

The 2050Today carbon footprint takes into account the reported emissions generated by the activities of the institution over one year and is divided by categories:

Energy and water

It takes into account the amount of the consumed electricity produced and purchased by the institution. The energy consumed to heat and/or cool the institution’s building area and the consumed water are included as well.

Mobility

It takes into consideration business travels and commuting (on a survey basis).

Food

The CO2 impact of food includes the catering of the institution and individual consumption (on a survey basis) during working hours.

Purchased goods

The perimeter of purchased goods is set to a list of new office equipment, new mobility equipment (vehicles) and construction materials.

Waste

The perimeter of the waste inventory is set to waste production from facilities and internal operations of the institution.

It has to be noted that the collected data of the 2050Today members resulting in each carbon footprint are not yet fully standardized and might not be entirely complete. Data collection is being progressively harmonized and improved. Therefore, direct comparisons between tCO2 / employee among institutions – be it in general or per sector – are not yet possible nor relevant. The climate crisis is hitting hardest where inequality runs deep, disproportionately impacting women and girls who are too often excluded from decision-making spaces where climate strategies are shaped. Systems change starts with small steps that each of us take to care for each other and our environment. The International Gender Champions Secretariat is proud to join the 2050 Today initiative to become more aware of the environmental impact of our actions, and to make more conscious choices regarding what we purchase, how we travel and operate day to day. We look forward to collaborating more deeply with IGC members and organisations in Geneva to collectively drive action. Gender equality and climate action go hand in hand.

Contribution to climate action

The International Gender Champions (IGC) is deeply committed to advancing gender equality as a cornerstone of effective and inclusive climate action. Strengthening the Climate-Gender Nexus across global policy and practice is one of the IGC’s four strategic objectives since 2022. Through its Climate Impact Group, the IGC mobilises high-level leadership to integrate gender perspectives into climate negotiations, finance, and solutions. This commitment is also embodied in the Geneva Pledge for Gender-Responsive Climate Action, which now brings together over 80 signatories across international organisations, member state missions, and civil society.

As a values-driven network, the IGC is committed to advancing climate action through advocacy, knowledge-sharing and practical action. The IGC Secretariat will take proactive steps towards reducing the climate impact of its operations, with a particular focus on food and waste management.

Thematic actions

Biodiversity

The IGC offices are on the premises of the Geneva Graduate Institute (Maison de la Paix). The Institute has a Community Garden and aims continuing to promote this activity by organising events and workshops to raise awareness within its community and encourage participation in the project.

Energy

As a tenant of the Maison de la Paix (Geneva Graduate Institute), the IGC Secretariat has limited influence on energy-related decisions. However, the Geneva Graduate Institute aims reduce its emissions from heating and electricity in order to reduce its carbon footprint associated with energy. The Maison de la Paix is one of the first buildings to have benefited from the GeniLac technology implemented by SIG, making it a relatively energy-efficient building. In the coming years, the Institute plans to go even further by exploring the financial feasibility of a plan to install solar panels on the roofs of the Maison de la Paix.

Food

The IGC Secretariat has committed to only catering vegetarian food for events and gatherings, and opts for local providers with seasonal menus wherever possible. For the future, the Secretariat seeks to extend these guidelines also to its partners, for instance during the Champions Meetings hosted by different members of the network.

Mobility

The IGC Secretariat chooses events locations with view to their accessibility via public transport/ bike/ foot. Car pooling options will be explored for future events.

Sustainable IT

The IGC Secretariat team is using Ecosia.org as a default browser and is encouraging others to do the same.

Incubated by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), the IGC Secretariat benefits from the Centre’s technical equipment. The GCSP is committed to maximising the lifespan of technical equipment, and is taking active steps to minimise electric waste.

Waste management

At the Maison de la Paix, waste is sorted into separate bins. The Secretariat commits to using reusable cups, plates, cutlery and water bottles and will encourage partners to do the same at events. Through realistic planning of needs and sharing of leftovers, the Secretariat further avoids food waste at events.

Contribution to climate action

The Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP) addresses pollution issues that critically impact health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Pollution exacerbates the triple planetary crisis and climate change. GAHP employs a multisectoral approach to tackle these interconnected challenges effectively.

Thematic actions

Biodiversity

GAHP collaborates with local governments to develop infrastructure and policies for managing hazardous and chemical waste, aiming to prevent contamination of air, soil, and water.

GAHP protects biodiversity by tackling pollution and environmental degradation that threaten ecosystems. Its initiatives reduce harmful pollutants like heavy metals, pesticides, and pollution, which damage habitats and disrupt ecosystems. By promoting sustainable practices in agriculture, waste management, and industry, GAHP helps mitigate climate change, preserve natural habitats, and support ecosystem restoration, ensuring biodiversity is protected for future generations.

Energy

GAHP addresses energy challenges by promoting sustainable practices. We have initiatives in the management of used lead-acid batteries (ULABs) in Latin America and open burning in Vietnam. Through circular economy principles, GAHP supports the recycling of battery components, reducing lead emissions and preventing informal dismantling. This approach contributes to cleaner energy solutions, as seen in Brazil’s recent policy change, which lowers production costs, reduces market prices, and curbs the trafficking of contaminated materials in South America.

Additionally, GAHP advocates for transitioning from open burning, a wasteful energy practice, to reduce emissions, improve health, and foster cleaner energy systems.

Food

GAHP collaborates with agricultural communities to reduce harmful practices like open burning of crop residues and excessive pesticide use, which threaten food safety and public health. In Vietnam, the Environmental Pollution Program (EPP) educates farmers on sustainable alternatives and healthier farming practices, promoting safer food production and long-term ecosystem restoration. By addressing toxic pollutants like lead and mercury, GAHP also indirectly strengthens the safety of food supply chains.

Mobility

GAHP promotes sustainable mobility by maintaining a predominantly remote workforce, reducing daily commutes and energy consumption. Most employees work remotely and prioritize virtual meetings, minimizing the carbon footprint of travel. The Geneva secretariat remains small, working up to 40% from home, with project experts employed locally in their respective countries. The Geneva Secretariat prioritizes the use of public transportation to reach the office.

GAHP also supports flexible work arrangements, allowing employees to choose between remote work and co-working spaces. When travel is necessary, GAHP tries to compensate for the carbon footprint through taxes, further reinforcing its commitment to sustainability. This approach enhances work-life balance while reducing energy use and promoting eco-friendly operations.

Sustainable IT

GAHP’s approach to Sustainable IT integrates energy-efficient technologies, supports remote work to reduce commuting emissions, and ensures responsible e-waste management. The organization advocates for sustainable IT practices within its partner networks, encouraging energy-efficient solutions and responsible recycling. For example, GAHP has implemented an e-waste initiative in Azerbaijan as part of its Health and Pollution Action Plan.

Additionally, GAHP supports digital tools that contribute to sustainability, such as satellite imagery of open burning in Vietnam under the Environmental Pollution Program (EPP), helping to monitor environmental impacts and promote sustainable practices. On a daily basis, GAHP’s IT system is designed to reduce environmental impact by storing all documents in an electronic shared archive, eliminating the need for printing and mailing.

Waste management

GAHP actively supports sustainable waste management practices to address the harmful effects of improper waste disposal on health and the environment. A key focus is integrating circular economy principles into waste management to mitigate risks from hazardous waste, including e-waste, which often contains lead, mercury, sulfuric acid, contaminated plastics, and other toxic substances. These contaminants disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, particularly children, through environmental exposure and pose a threat to ecosystems.

In collaboration with local governments and stakeholders from relevant sectors, GAHP works to develop and promote integrated waste management systems. One of our largest initiatives is in Latin America, where GAHP has been mandated by MERCOSUR countries to facilitate dialogue on Used Lead-Acid Batteries (ULABs), leading to recent significant policy achievements. GAHP also runs awareness campaigns to educate the public on the dangers of burning or improperly disposing of waste and advocates for safer recycling practices. This year, GAHP partnered with SIG in Geneva to illuminate the Jet d’Eau in green on “Zero Waste” Day (30th of March 2025) to raise awareness.

The Health Diplomacy Alliance is dedicated to promoting global health through diplomatic channels, emphasizing collaboration and positioning health as pivotal for both global stability and economic prosperity.

The Health Diplomacy Alliance is strongly committed to climate action and aims to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, alongside with the other institutions of the international Geneva.

Thematic actions

Biodiversity

Collaboration with local organizations and initiatives focused on biodiversity conservation is encouraged to foster partnerships and leverage collective efforts in safeguarding ecosystems and wildlife, specially related to those in Lac Léman.

Education and awareness programs are implemented to inform staff members about the importance of biodiversity conservation and to encourage individual actions that contribute to preserving biodiversity, both locally and globally.

Energy

Emphasizing energy efficiency in both co-working and remote work environments, the Health Diplomacy Alliance promotes responsible energy use for staff working in hybrid setups.

For remote workers, guidance is provided on energy-saving measures at home, including the use of energy-efficient appliances and adjusting heating or cooling settings for optimal energy conservation.

Staff members are encouraged to schedule virtual meetings when possible to reduce the need for travel and associated energy consumption.

The Health Diplomacy Alliance supports a flexible approach to work, allowing staff to choose between co-working space and remote work based on individual preferences and operational requirements, thereby minimizing overall energy usage.

Food

In line with sustainable practices, the Health Diplomacy Alliance prioritizes the procurement of locally sourced, organic, and sustainable food for meetings and events.

Staff members are encouraged to choose locally sourced, organic, and sustainable food options for both individual consumption and catering at meetings and events.

Business lunches are preferably hosted at establishments that prioritize the use of local Geneva products and goods, promoting sustainability and supporting the local economy.

The Health Diplomacy Alliance collaborates with venues that prioritize sustainability, emphasizing the use of reusable items to minimize single-use plastic and packaging waste.

In addition to organic and locally sourced food options, vegan and vegetarian menus are increasingly offered at events to accommodate diverse dietary preferences and reduce the environmental footprint of food consumption.

Mobility

Emphasizing sustainable transportation, the Health Diplomacy Alliance encourages staff to prioritize walking or cycling for short-distance meetings, including trains, for international meetings whenever feasible.

Carpooling is promoted for occasions where multiple staff members need to attend the same event or meeting.

Sustainable IT

Staff members are encouraged to enable power-saving features on computers and electronic devices to reduce energy consumption.

Unplugging devices when not in use is promoted to further minimize energy wastage.

Waste management

In efforts to reduce single-use plastic, the Health Diplomacy Alliance has replaced plastic-bottled water with tap water provided in reusable glass bottles.

Printing is encouraged only when necessary, with double-sided printing and recycled paper.

The Health Diplomacy Alliance has transitioned to smaller, more economical copy machines to minimize resource consumption.

Efforts have been made to minimize paper usage by transitioning to electronic documentation where feasible.

Contribution to climate action

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland-Geneva is a highly committed actor in local climate action. By adopting the four-year sustainability strategy for 2021-2024 by the Rectorate, the 6 schools (hautes écoles) of University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland-Geneva’s aim to set new ambitions and firm commitments towards sustainability. Due to its multidisciplinary, professionalizing, and deeply rooted nature, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland-Geneva must make an essential contribution to the necessary transition that is needed. It is our role to implement this strategy, through the activities of its 6 schools: Geneva School of Engineering, Architecture and Landscape (HEPIA), Geneva School of Business Administration (HEG), Geneva School of Art and Design (HEAD), Haute école de musique de Genève (HEM), Geneva School of Social Work (HETS), Geneva School of Health Sciences (HEdS).

The strategy provides a framework for implementing sustainability measures. It enables each component (schools, domains, and administrative services) to contribute, with its specific objectives, its own resources, and within its scope of action, to the realization of common commitments. It also contributes to meeting the legal requirements regarding sustainability for Swiss universities and universities of applied sciences and arts.

This strategy has been adopted in line with a global context of transition towards a more sustainable world, particularly with the adoption of the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as a national context with the adoption of the Swiss Federal Council’s 2030 Sustainable Development Strategy. Based on this framework, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland-Geneva aims to take measures in favor of climate action and sustainability and has identified five action areas: governance, education, research and innovation, its societal responsibility, and sustainable management.

Sustainable Purchases
The University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland-Geneva has adopted a Sustainable Purchase Policy in march 2022. We are now aiming for responsible purchases whose environmental, social and economic impacts are as positive as possible over the entire life cycle. Responsible purchasing encompasses aspects of social responsibility linked to goods or services and suppliers involved in supply chains. The implementation of this policy is ongoing, alongside trainings for staff responsible for purchases.

Thematic actions

Energy

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland-Geneva has joined the Exemplary Energy and Climate (EEC) initiative, one of the 12 measures of the federal 2050 energy strategy. EEC participants set individual targets until 2026 and 2030 in terms of energy efficiency, ecological electricity production, renewable heat and cold as well as renewable fuels.

Mobility

Aware of the environmental and climatic impacts linked to the mobility of its community, but also in order to support the cantonal authorities in their objectives, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland-Geneva has adopted a Mobility Policy (2023-26). This transparent and transversal policy aims to encourage a change in practices towards low-carbon modes of travel, with the objective of a reduction of 5 to 10% in the average km traveled in Individual Motorized Transport by 2030 (year of reference 2023). Three main axes have been identified in order to implement this policy, in particular regular monitoring of travel practices, promotion of sustainable modes; and support for the entire community in the form of awareness and communication.

Following a survey carried out in collaboration with Transports Publics Genevois, we identified that 80% of our community travels sustainably, a very promising result and one to be encouraged.

In parallel, we collaborate with Movetia and its Greener Mobility IRO-Kit to encourage our students and staff to choose alternative modes of transportation to flying for their travels.

Sustainable IT

In the realm of sustainable IT, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland-Geneva promotes the recycling of its equipment and, through the collaborative platform “sustainable laboratories,” the institution donates digital equipment to developing countries. This year, the institution is looking to transform its Digital Strategy into a Responsible Digital Strategy so to set up the framework for systemic change in daily digital practices.

Waste management

In Geneva, zero waste coffee bars have been installed to reduce the ecological footprint of takeaway coffees.
The University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland-Geneva has a good recycling ratio, with adequate equipment in all its sites, effectively covering all waste fractions. Our next steps will consist in addressing food waste in our restaurants, in accordance with Geneva State’s future requirements.

We cannot achieve our mission to end HIV/AIDS globally in children, youth, and families without mitigating the effects of climate change. Climate change is already adversely affecting human health and health systems, including efforts to reduce HIV transmission, interruption in HIV and TB care and treatment, and morbidity and mortality rate of people living with HIV and TB. Considering this, and by joining the 2050Today initiative, EGPAF aims to implement a set of climate actions aimed at decreasing EGPAF’s carbon emissions and combating the negative effects of climate change on our mission. EGPAF has recently established its global baseline carbon footprint and is developing a reduction roadmap and action plan. The following climate actions are already in place at the Geneva office level.

Thematic actions

Energy

In 2024, EGPAF Geneva will move to the energy-efficient Green Village. The Green Village is the first project in the canton of Geneva to be SEED next generation living-certified.

Food

At EGPAF Geneva we try to prioritize caterers using seasonal, locally sourced food and beverages.

Mobility

The majority of EGPAF Geneva employees commute by public transport or bike. A flexible work policy allows staff to work from home, reducing commuting-related emissions.
As an international organization, we work closely with our teams across sub-Saharan Africa and in the US. Online and remote meetings are our preferred means of communication, but at times, business travel is unavoidable. Where travel is required to drive our mission, direct travel is preferred wherever possible, and the EGPAF Geneva team flies exclusively economy.

Waste management

EGPAF Geneva office has reduced single used items such as plastic cups and utensils almost exclusively utilizing washable kitchen items. Plastic beverage bottles are reduced to the strict minimum and tap water is the preferred option.

Contribution to climate action

EPFL is engaged to comply with the Swiss government’s climate requirements of cutting energy-related greenhouse gas emissions by 50% (from 2006 levels) by 2030 and becoming carbon neutral by offsetting energy-related emissions (starting in 2020). Further it aims to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement, which Switzerland ratified in 2017.

EPFL aims for Net Zero by 2040. Achieving net zero emissions means removing from the air the same amount of carbon that is released by the operations. EPFL has a number of initiatives in place to develop technology for capturing, using and storing carbon; these include the Solutions4Sustainability initiative and many research projects at the labs. The school intends to serve as a living lab for testing the most promising systems. In reaching net zero, EPFL will work with other ETH Domain organizations through the initiatives Swiss Center of Excellence on Net-Zero Emissions (SCENE) and Speed2Zero. Because new technology will not be enough to get EPFL to net zero, the top priority remains cutting carbon emissions.

Biodiversity

The Lausanne campus (buildings, pathways, circulation, integration of sculptures, planting of greenery) was designed in the 70s as a “Gesamtkunstwerk” (total work of art), i.e. in the manner of a landscape intended as an autonomous microcosm. However, as new buildings have been constructed to accommodate the growth of the campus, the proportion of mineralised surfaces has increased to the detriment of permeable and vegetated surfaces.

A masterplan for mobility and public spaces is currently being drawn up, with the goal to creating a more inclusive, accessible and sustainable campus. It will aim to integrate undeveloped public spaces into plans for major construction projects, densification and infrastructure renovation, with the ambition of creating outdoor spaces that are more welcoming, peaceful and resilient in the face of climate change.

Campus Piéton project launched through a participatory approach.
Diagnostic study of strategic biodiversity areas.
200 trees and 450 shrubs planted, as part of the canopy plant (1’000 trees to be planted in 5 years).

EPFL resilient campus

Energy

In 1978, following the first oil crisis, EPFL made a visionary decision to install a power plant on the Lausanne campus that draws thermal energy from Lake Geneva. The plant was subsequently renovated so that, in 2022, the campus was entirely oil-free. Today an estimated 54% of consumed energy comes from Lake Geneva, 6% from natural gas and 40% from electrical power. Approximately half of the electrical power comes from renewable sources in Switzerland. However, the campus still emits over 16,000 tons CO2-eq per year, making up about a third of the measured carbon footprint. This is due to the significant CO2 impact of importing fossil fuel-derived electricity into Switzerland in winter.

2022 Achievements

Renovation work completed on the Lausanne campus’ thermal power plant, making it an oil-free campus
2-MW data centre connected to the thermal power plant on the Lausanne campus, so that servers are cooled with lake water and the heat they generate is recovered
The medium- to low-voltage power conversion system on the Lausanne campus reduced from 21 kV to 20 kV, reducing power use by 3%

EPFL Energy and Buildings

Food

There are currently around 16,000 people in the EPFL community, and the food they consume on campus accounts for about 13% of total carbon emissions (>6,000 tons CO2-eq in 2019). Half of these emissions derive from meat products, even though these products make up less than 15% of overall food purchases. EPFL rolled out an ambitious sustainable food-services strategy in 2019 that aims to dramatically change food consumption on campus, emphasizing meals made from fresh, local and seasonal products and dishes that are tasty, nutritionally balanced, affordable (especially for students) and all with the lowest possible environmental impact.

Mobility

As the main source of CO₂ emissions in 2022, with 38% from academic travel and 12% from commuting, mobility has been identified as a priority for reducing EPFL’s environmental footprint.

Academic travel

Meeting peers and participating in international events is a key element of the research process. It gives scientists the opportunity to share their ideas, build professional networks and boost their visibility. By the same token, students can benefit from exchange programs, study trips and internships abroad. Yet, academic travel is the EPFL’s main source of greenhouse gas emissions, generating the equivalent of around 16,600 tonnes of CO_2-eq with over 20,000 flights taken in 2019.

The EPFL Climate and Sustainability Strategy’s objectives aims at a reduction of at least 30% in carbon emissions linked to academic travel by 2030 (ref. 2019), through: 1) a review of EPFL’s travel policy, 2) encouragement of a voluntary reduction in air travel and 3) improved videoconferencing infrastructures.

2022-2023 Achievements

New business and student travel policy came into force in January 2023 including:

All travel bookings to be made through a central travel agency
Use of the train for destinations in Europe reachable in less than 6 hours
Priority booking of direct flights and airlines efficient in terms of CO₂
Booking in economy class for flights of less than 6 hours
Use of private vehicles for business purposes limited to exceptional cases.

The implementation of these travel guidelines was supported by an awareness campaign on climate impact of air travel.

Commuting

Since 2003, EPFL has carried out mobility surveys among its students and employees to understand changes in mobility practices, plan transport infrastructure and calculate the environmental impact of commuting. Between 2003 and 2021, and following the introduction of the EPFL Mobility Plan, the results revealed a profound transformation in mobility behaviors, with in particular: 1) an exponential increase in the proportion of walking (from 4% to 16%) and cycling (from 13% to 26%), among both students and staff, 2) a sharp reduction in the use of individual motorized transport (from 34% to 18%), particularly among staff.

2022-2023 Achievements

Diagnostic studies have been carried out on various commuting topics, such as:

Access to outdoor spaces for people with reduced mobility, with the aim of providing a global vision of the facilities to plan an accessible and inclusive campus.
On car parking in anticipation of the revision of EPFL’s parking policy, which aims to reduce the number of parking spaces on campus by 30% by 2025.
Quantify the environmental impact of deliveries to the EPFL, with a proposal for an action plan to reduce it.

Sustainable IT

As a technology school, the EPFL is particularly sensitive to the environmental impact of its IT systems. This impact stems not only from greenhouse gas emissions but also from the use of natural resources such as energy, water and rare-earth minerals. Roughly 10% of EPFL’s carbon footprint in 2019 came from the manufacture of IT equipment including computers, screens and tablets, while another 4% (or 6,800 tons CO2-eq) came from IT-related power use. Aware of its ever-growing digital needs, both for teaching and research, EPFL is committed to implementing an exemplary Sustainable IT Strategy.

EPFL’s procurement policy will follow a holistic, circular-economy approach that includes questioning needs, extending the lifespan of equipment and recovering waste. EPFL currently estimates that adding purchased products and services to measured carbon emissions (excluding IT-, food-, and travel-related emissions, which are already accounted for) would double its carbon footprint. Purchasing criteria – whether for selecting suppliers or specific products and services – will systematically incorporate social, environmental, and economic factors and consider the entire life cycle of the product or service in question. This entails forming partnerships with suppliers who share EPFL’s vision, to guide the community towards sustainable practices.

Open Geneva is firmly dedicated to climate action, endeavoring to achieve a 50% reduction in its carbon footprint by 2030 and reach the carbon neutrality by 2050, in conjunction with the other institutions of the International Geneva.

Thematic actions

Food

All meals served at our many events are vegetarian and based on local, seasonal produce. We pay careful attention to the quantities of food we buy, to avoid food waste as much as possible.

Mobility

We encourage participants in our events to use public transport. For example, during the Open Innovation Festival – our biggest event – we developed partnerships with Genève Roule and Carvelo to encourage our 1,000 participants to use soft mobility to get around the city.

Waste management

We encourage the use of reusable dishes as much as possible, and limit the use of plastic bottles and single doses of coffee to keep waste to a minimum at our events. We educate our participants to limit the amount of waste produced as much as possible with dedicated communications and by providing reusable dishes and eco-cups. We systematically sort our waste at the end of each event, involving our participants in this task.

Contribution to climate action

The offices of the Norwegian Refugee Council and the International Displacement Monitoring Centre in Geneva have the primary mission of influencing global policies and partnerships regarding humanitarian aid and displacement. These two institutions also work to ensure that displacements related to climate disasters are included in global policy processes. Thus, given the importance of climate issues to both institutions, they have committed to the 2050Today initiative. Through this initiative, they aim to reduce their emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2050.

Thematic actions

Biodiversity

• Plants – 24 in hydroculture, 26 in soil and 4 small plants brought by users.
• 100% recycled printing paper (Plastic-free packaging, ColorLok, FSC and EU Ecolabel certified).
• We print as a little as possible and use digital documents and docusign to sign documents.

Energy

10% of the electricity is certified with the label Vitale Vert from the SIG.

Food

• When we order catering, we order at least 50% vegan/vegetarian, we request environmentally friendly packaging.
• We buy biodegradable teas, and our coffee beans are rain forest alliance approved.
• We use crockery cups, plates and real glasses and cutlery.
• We use Oecoplan phosphate-free dishwasher tablets
• We use EU Ecolabel and is biodegradable washing up liquid.
• Most users drink local tap water, we have no vending machines or water dispensers.

Mobility

Overall the Geneva office had a 42% response rate (35 people). The breakdown of those responses are:

• 17 people (37%) said that they took active transportation to work, traveling an average of 17 km per week. The total for active transport is 0 tCO2e.
• 8 people (26%) responded that they took a car to work, traveling an average of 48 km per week. The total for cars is 7.31 tCO2e.
• 9 people (34%) responded that they took public transportation to work, traveling an average of 122 km per week. The total for public transportation is 8.57 tCO2e.
• 1 person (3%) works from home full time, with the average per staff member working from home 1.6 days per week. The total for WFH is 1.54 tCO2e.

At the humanitarian hub we only have 4 parking places and some people rent outside but this deters employees from taking the car to the office.

We recycle, paper & pet and glass.

Contribution to climate action

The Geneva Graduate Institute is highly engaged in climate action within its activities in higher education. The institution has implemented the Target Initiative on Sustainability in Autumn 2021 with the aim of promoting and integrating sustainability ideas across all areas of interest of the Graduate Institute, from teaching practices, research questions, students’ engagement, partnerships, to the daily habits of its community. The general objectives of the initiative are to develop and implement sustainability strategies, goals, and targets linked to the institutional strategic and operational planning processes, initiate policy initiatives, comply with relevant legislative requirements, provide an innovative forum for discussing sustainability issues, and contribute to reinforcing shared values around sustainability.

Biodiversity

In terms of biodiversity, the Geneva Graduate Institute has a Community Garden and aims continuing to promote this activity by organizing events and workshops to raise awareness within its community and encourage participation in the project. Additionally, the institution plans to create new green areas within its student residences, particularly by adding plants both indoors and outdoors.

Energy

Concerning energy, the Geneva Graduate Institute aims to reduce its emissions from heating and electricity in order to reduce its carbon footprint associated with energy. In addition, the institution aims to raise awareness among its large community of international students on reducing energy use in buildings (and students’ residences)

Food

In the realm of food, to promote sustainable eating habits, the Geneva Graduate Institute plans to raise the portion of vegetarian meals purchased in the cafeteria and to increase the portion of locally sourced products. Moreover, the institution aims to raise awareness among students and staff about the carbon footprint associated with food choices. For coffee, recommendations will be made regarding purchasing fairtrade coffee and abandoning the use of capsules.

Mobility

Regarding mobility, the Geneva Graduate Institute aims to reduce its mobility-related emissions by 25% by 2030. To achieve this, the institution first plans to enhance data collection and monitoring of these emissions. Furthermore, the institution aims to promote sustainable mobility by providing more bike parking spaces and raising awareness among its employees and students to use the bikes it provides. Additionally, recommendations will be made to employees to favor the use of electric vehicles over traditional ones.

Sustainable IT

Sustainable IT is also an important theme for the Geneva Graduate Institute, which plans to raise awareness within its community by organizing workshops and providing podcasts from the IT department and external experts on the subject. It also plans to conduct data archiving and cleaning twice a year.

Concerning waste management, the Geneva Graduate Institute aspires to increase the number of recycling stations and reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste in the coming years, while also raising awareness within its community about proper waste management practices.

Contribution to climate action

The World Council of Churches (hereafter WCC), a fellowship of 352 churches in over 120 countries representing half a billion Christians, is a proud member of the 2050Today initiative. Our faith compels us to commit to reducing our carbon footprint and to do our part to realise the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The WCC has been reflecting on sustainability in relation to poverty since the early 1970s, long before the concept gained currency in international politics and business. At its Assembly in Nairobi in 1975 the WCC called for a “Just, Participatory and Sustainable Society” and helped to catapult the notion of sustainability into the global sphere.

The WCC participated in the United Nations (UN) Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and in the first Conference of Parties (COP) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1995. Since then, WCC has attended every COP event, advocating for climate justice and support for poor and vulnerable countries and communities who are least responsible for the climate crisis but suffer its worst effects.

The WCC has produced several resources for our member churches to continue to nurture a care-for-creation ethos. “Roadmap for an Economy of Life and Ecological Justice” and “Walk the Talk” gather concrete examples of how churches can tread gently on, and live justly with people and planet. “Cooler Earth, Higher Benefits” highlights how the banking and investment decisions of churches can promote sustainable pathways. In 2022, the WCC together with UN Environment Programme and other faith partners jointly released a statement on “Climate Responsible Finance” as a moral imperative towards the well-being of children.

At the last General Assembly of the WCC, held in Karlsruhe in 2022, we addressed the climate emergency as a priority for churches. We declared: “The climate emergency is an ethical, moral and spiritual crisis, manifested in a fixation on profit.”

Energy

At the 2022 Assembly, the WCC also committed “to reduce its institutional carbon footprint to net-zero by 2030.”

Key to realising this goal is the WCC’s real estate project in Geneva called “Green Village” – the first Geneva property development with the “One Planet Living” (OPL) label. The project will positively impact greenhouse gas emissions by implementing a range of environmentally friendly practices.

The Green Village will provide six new buildings in the municipality of Le Grand-Saconnex, each symbolically bearing the name of a key international treaty in sustainable development: Kyoto, Montreal, Rio, Lima, Durban and Stockholm. All the buildings will be powered by renewable energy, through photovoltaic solar panels and networked energy.

Mobility

The WCC encourages its employees to use public transportation when commuting to work by offering a public transport subsidy.

Waste management

The Green Village constructions will respect all the OPL label standards, with priority given to construction materials from the local economy, and those recycled from the existing structures.

We hope to reach the goal of zero waste via an on-site eco-centre and through the policy of waste reuse put forward by the Grand-Saconnex municipality.

Scope 2 represents indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling consumed by the reporting company.

The 2050Today carbon footprint takes into account the reported emissions generated by the activities of the institution over one year and is divided by categories:

The SDG office ensures the sustainability strategy of UNIGE and facilitates the involvement of various services, centers, and faculties. Footprint and emissions by scope

This carbon footprint takes into account the reported emissions generated by the activities of the institution over one year and was established according to international standards by Climate Services. Mobility takes into consideration business travels and commuting (on a survey basis). The CO2 impact of food includes the catering of the institution and individual consumption (on a survey basis) during working hours. Nevertheless the collected data of the 2050Today members resulting in each carbon footprint are not yet fully standardized nor entirely complete. Data collection is being progressively harmonized and improved. Therefore direct comparisons between tCO2 / employee among institutions – be it in general or per sector – are not yet possible nor relevant.

According to ISO 14064, the distribution of emissions is done by scopes.

Contribution to climate action

PATH is a global nonprofit dedicated to achieving health equity. With more than 40 years of experience forging multisector partnerships and expertise in science, economics, technology, advocacy, and dozens of other specialties, PATH develops and scales up innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing health challenges. Our Mission is to advance health equity through innovation and partnership.

PATH has been present in the region Grand Genève since 2000. The Foundation for Appropriate Technologies in Health (FATH) was founded by PATH and has operated in the Geneva canton, Switzerland, since 2011.

In 2020, FATH embarked on a pioneering journey to chart a greener future, conducting an environmental factors survey that meticulously mapped out the primary sources of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), water consumption, and waste. This initiative, rooted deeply in PATH’s overarching commitment to environmental stewardship, marked a significant stride towards sustainability. Motivated by a collective desire to make a meaningful difference, the Switzerland team’s efforts have not only spotlighted the path to reducing GHG emissions but have also served as a beacon of inspiration for all of PATH to rally behind the sustainability cause.

Following these actions, another important commitment to reducing carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 was undertaken by FATH and on December 5, 2023, during the second 2050Today High-Level Meeting, FATH- the Swiss affiliate of PATH, signed the 2050Today Charter, that establishes a reference framework for decarbonizing International Geneva.

We are proud to be part of the 2050Today initiative and are deeply committed to reducing our GHG emissions through sustained, long-term initiatives across various thematic areas.

Energy

FATH office in Geneva is the property of the Foundation for the International Organisations Buildings (FIPOI), a private non-profit foundation that is a member of the 2050Today initiative. Our building is Minergie certified and is designed to minimize its impact on the environment and contribute to long-term sustainability.
Furthermore, FATH advocates for sustainable energy practices in the office. To foster awareness among employees regarding the importance of water and energy conservation and to promote responsible daily habits, we have created informative and instructive posters displayed within the workplace. These posters feature ecological facts, statistics, and clear instructions aimed at influencing behaviors such as:

Boiling only the necessary amount of water, avoiding unnecessary wastage.
Turning off taps while soaping hands, brushing teeth, or washing dishes to conserve water.
Switching off electrical appliances such as coffee machines, boilers, and microwaves during non-working hours, weekends, and holidays to reduce energy consumption.
Additionally, FATH has engaged with the cleaning company to encourage the adoption of eco-friendly practices. This includes initiatives such as avoiding running the dishwasher when it’s not full and selecting eco-friendly cleaning programs.

Food

Operating from a small-sized office with no cafeteria, our approach to food revolves around promoting sustainability among employees. This entails prioritizing vegetarian options, sourcing local, organic, and seasonal produce, minimizing food waste, and avoiding single-use containers. To foster these practices, FATH is implementing a communication strategy, highlighting easily adoptable best practices through informative presentations during staff meetings. We anticipate a ripple effect, as encouraging sustainable behaviors not only diminishes FATHs carbon footprint but also extends to employees adopting eco-conscious habits in their personal lives.

During in-house events and meetings, we favor vegetarian and/or vegan meals. We have compiled a list of local restaurants and caterers specializing in sustainable, nutritious offerings, which was shared with our team. Labels such as “Fait maison”and “GRTA”, alongside the Ville de Genève’s website, help us identify establishments in Geneva committed to balanced, sustainable dining choices.

Moreover, FATH ensures appropriate/reasonable food ordering tailored to the number of attendees to minimize surplus, with any leftovers promptly communicated to staff for their consumption. Whenever feasible, we opt for bicycle delivery to further diminish our carbon footprint.

Mobility

Mobility accounts for the majority of FATH’s carbon footprint, at 97.6%. To mitigate emissions stemming from business travel, PATH’s global travel policy mandates that employees consider the CO2 footprint when submitting booking requests. Additionally, out of respect for donor funding, PATH advises employees to exercise prudence when selecting airline class of service, ensuring cost-effectiveness and environmental responsibility. All travel bookings are made through a central travel agency which allows us to closely monitor our carbon footprint.

To reduce the environmental impact of commuting and encourage low-impact transportation alternatives, FATH offers full coverage for public transport for employees, as opposed to partial coverage for parking spaces. Additionally, we facilitate the charging of electric bikes free of charge in the office premises. Moreover, FATH is participating in the 2024 Bike to Work Challenge, to advocate for soft mobility options for commuting.

Sustainable IT

FATH prioritizes sustainable approaches in our IT operations. For instance, rather than providing work mobile phones to our staff, we opt for mobile phone stipends for the use of a personal phone. Additionally, we moved landline phones to digital technologies; thus hardware setup is no more required. We are committed to reducing our environmental footprint by minimizing new IT equipment purchases, through the actions listed above and by focusing on reusing and repairing existing devices whenever possible.

Waste management

FATH has taken several initiatives to enhance waste management at workplace. Recycling boxes and compost bins are now stationed in both kitchens, accompanied by informative posters detailing the environmental consequences of various waste types. Additionally, FATH has banned single-use containers and cutlery, opting instead for reusable kitchenware. To tackle disposable packaging waste during lunch breaks, FATH has joined the reCIRCLE initiative, procuring reusable containers for staff members to utilize when ordering takeout. Furthermore, we’ve minimized printing activities to reduce paper waste. Moreover, we are building sustainable procurement practices and purchasing decisions that aim to meet our requirement for goods or services, and at the same time minimize the impact on environment which involves considerations like using eco-friendly or recycled materials, minimizing waste, and reducing carbon emissions through responsible transportation and manufacturing methods.

More than twenty years ago, Kofi Annan warned : “Science tells us that if we do not take the right action now, climate change will bring havoc, even within our lifetime” and that “unless action is taken on climate change, sustainable development will not be achieved.”. We have waited far too long to take action. Young people all over the world are already struggling with the impact of our leaders’ inability to reduce GHG emissions meaningfully. The Kofi Annan Foundation is very pleased, therefore, to be part of the 2050Today initiative, which is focused on immediate, concrete and continuous reduction measures. We will do our part !

Contribution to climate action

The Kofi Annan Foundation is strongly committed to climate action, especially as climate change has direct consequences for many of the areas on which the Foundation works, such as peace, democracy, and hunger. The Kofi Annan Foundation is also actively involved in promoting several roadmaps for climate action, such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Climate Agreement. In this context, the Foundation aims to reduce the carbon emissions associated with its activities in Geneva by 2030. To achieve this, the Kofi Annan Foundation is taking actions, with a particular focus on mobility, sustainable IT, and waste management. All employees participate in these actions and adopt behaviors that help to achieve the Foundation’s climate objectives.

Thematic actions

Biodiversity

The Foundation rents premises in a building managed by FIPOI. Within the limited space and the restrictions related to the tenancy conditions, the Foundation has potted plants in its office to reduce carbon dioxide levels and thereby help reduce the amount of this greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. While the impact of houseplants on global carbon dioxide levels may be small, every little bit counts when it comes to fighting climate change. The Foundation is also proud to host on its terrace the nesting spot for a family of common kestrel. Every spring the birds return, and several are born on our terrace!

Energy

As a tenant, the Foundation has limited influence on energy-related decisions, but the building will soon be connected to the GeniLac network, which will reduce energy-related emissions. The Foundation continuously reminds its employees to practice good daily habits such as switching off lights, computers and printers at the end of each workday, and has installed a timer for the shared printer/scanner.

Food

The Foundation does not have a cafeteria, and most employees do not consume meat during lunchtime meals. Furthermore, when events/receptions are organized, meat is not offered.Most employees bring their own lunch thereby reducing single use plastic and single use packaging. Benefitting from the safe drinkable tap water in Geneva the Foundation stopped providing bottled mineral water in January 2022.

Mobility

At the Kofi Annan Foundation, employees demonstrate exemplary commuting habits, with the majority opting for bicycles and public transport to reach the workplace. Electric car drivers benefit from charging facilities in the parking lot. Additionally, most staff work from home at an average of 2 days per work week, effectively curbing mobility-related emissions. The Foundation actively pursues strategies to mitigate aviation emissions, although certain flightsremain unavoidable given its global mandate. Travel policy requires employees to travel in economy class. Discussions are underway regarding the feasibility of utilizing trains for intra-European journeys, such as from Geneva to Brussels or Vienna. These sustainable initiatives not only reduce the Foundation’s carbon footprint but also set a precedent for eco-friendly workplaces in Geneva.

Sustainable IT

The Kofi Annan Foundation is committed to keeping computer equipment beyond its usual lifespan, thus avoiding unnecessary carbon emissions by purchasing new hardware when it is not needed. It recycles or seeks to give a second life to old equipment. Notably, following the migration to Microsoft 365, several obsolete/outdated portable computers were donated to associations in low-income countries.

Waste management

Waste is sorted into separate bins for household waste, paper and cardboard, glass, aluminum and plastic. Stickers are posted to remind employees to sort waste. The Foundation uses glasses and ceramic cups for coffee and tea. It also provides reusable plates and cutlery that are not plastic/paper for use in the office. This way, emissions related to waste are minimal.

ICVA is committed to being an environmentally responsible organization. The board of ICVA adopted an environmental policy in 2019 to highlight the commitment. ICVA Secretariat recognizes that its day-to-day operations impact the environment in a number of ways and is committed to minimize the potentially harmful effects of its activities wherever and whenever possible. This policy establishes practices and guidelines for ICVA to effectively reduce the carbon footprint and other environmental impacts of its activities while operating under a limited budget. Each staff member is responsible and accountable for their contribution to reducing ICVA Secretariat’s carbon footprint.

Energy

The ICVA Secretariat will aim to transition to an energy provider capable of offering 100% renewable energy in Geneva by 2030. Additionally, to save energy and costs, ICVA Secretariat staff are requested to follow the instructions below:

Turn off lights, air conditioners, and heating in rooms that are not in use, especially in meeting rooms.
Set staff computers to “energy-saving mode” to minimize energy waste.
Printers must be turned off every evening.
Computer plugs should be unplugged when not in use.
Use the eco-cycle setting on the dishwasher.

Food

Regarding food, ICVA prioritizes vegetarian options during its events and pays close attention to the origin and production conditions of products.

Mobility

In the field of mobility, ICVA is implementing a series of measures. Firstly, travels lasting six hours or less should be made by train or bus if safety and security measures are ensured. Additionally, while acknowledging the importance of personal contacts and face-to-face dialogue, the ICVA Secretariat strives to minimize the number of trips and to find the most environmentally friendly air routes when planning travel. ICVAs travel provider is aware of the environmental policy and works to book flights that have the lowest environmental impact. Video conferences and teleconferences are also used whenever possible to reduce the number of travels. ICVA’s objective is to reduce staff air travel by 30% by 2025 compared to 2019.

Waste management

ICVA practices waste sorting and minimizes its consumption of plastic to the strictest minimum. Additionally, during its events, the use of reusable tableware is prioritized.

The 2050Today carbon footprint takes into account the reported emissions generated by the activities of the institution over one year and is divided by categories:

Contribution to climate action

Since 2018, the Fondation pour Genève has been committed to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. They organized a travelling, modular exhibition which represents the 17 SDGs in the form of 10 modules, with examples of actions taken by the UN and its partners, as well as recommendations for actions that everyone can take in their daily lives to help achieve these goals. The #YouNeedToKnow exhibition is produced in partnership with the Perception Change Project of the United Nations Office at Geneva. This content is now distributed to school classes in all parts of Switzerland with the precious help of the foundation Eduki.

Since 2020, the Fondation pour Genève has been supporting a series of broadcasts named “Go solutions durables” on the Sustainable Development Goals, produced by Léman Bleu. The aim of the project is to highlight the players involved in sustainable development and their interconnections at international, national, and local level.

Biodiversity

The green surroundings of the Fondation pour Genève offer significant potential for enhancing biodiversity. Currently, the foundation is exploring ways to introduce a wider variety of indigenous plants, particularly those recognized to attract pollinators. They plan to scatter flowerpots around the facility to attract a diverse range of insects and pollinators. Moreover, they plan to incorporate “insect hotels” that provide shelter, nesting sites and habitats for various beneficial insects such as solitary bees, butterflies and ladybugs. Additionally, the foundation intends to install bird feeders and water dispensers for birds, along with birdhouses designed to accommodate specific bird species.

Energy

The Fondation pour Genève has implemented motion-activated lighting in the office space and common area to save as much energy as possible, only having lights on when movement is detected.

Food

The Fondation pour Genève is actively working to enhance the ecological responsibility of its catering events. Their menus aim to offer a predominance of vegetarian options and prioritize sourcing local or regional ingredients, with special attention given to meat products.

Waste management

The Fondation pour Genève is dedicated to waste reduction efforts. Featuring a designated recycling station within their premises, they actively encourage all entities sharing their space to utilize this facility. They take responsibility for overseeing and organizing the disposal of recyclable materials, including tasks such as ensuring that the materials are collected regularly, sorting them appropriately and arranging for their proper disposal or recycling.

By managing this process effectively, the foundation aims to make it as convenient as possible for employees to participate in recycling efforts, thus encouraging their active involvement in waste reduction.

Contribution to climate action

The Building Foundation for International Organizations (FIPOI) provides infrastructure and services in the fields of real estate and conferences to the actors of the international Geneva. In its activities, the FIPOI is strongly committed to climate action, with sustainability at the heart of its approach. Indeed, the foundation strives to develop real estate projects that minimize their impact on the environment and contribute to long-term sustainability. By participating in the 2050Today initiative, FIPOI demonstrates its active contribution to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in the fight against climate change.

Thematic actions

Biodiversity

We own four beehives located at the CICG. These hives are maintained sustainably without chemicals and, thanks to their proximity to the Botanical Garden, their honey is rich and floral. They are certified organic, and honey is produced every year and sold at the CICG welcome desk.

Energy

Reducing energy consumption and emissions has long been part of FIPOI’s mission. As early as 2007 the foundation connected to the first Genève-Lac-Nations (GLN) hydrothermal network, taking water from Lake Geneva to heat and cool some of its buildings.

FIPOI is engaged in the ECO-21 program by SIG (Services Industriels de Genève) through a partnership aimed at reducing its energy consumption. This program, called Négawatt Vision, is reserved for companies classified as “major consumers”, a category that includes FIPOI due to its extensive building portfolio. Négawatt Vision assists FIPOI in implementing a coherent energy policy through personalized monitoring, support in establishing an energy management system, and the provision of subsidies for energy performance initiatives. This partnership significantly reduces emissions from FIPOI’s energy and building-related activities.

As part of its broader objective to reduce the electrical and thermal consumption of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, FIPOI has, among several other initiatives, installed a people counting system at the Geneva International Conference Center (CICG). This system will allow an optimization in operating large conference rooms in accordance with real needs. This concrete initiative is on the segment of an approach to move towards a more sustainable future.

In May 2025, the FIPO has been awarded the “GigaTrophée” by Services Industriels de Genève (SIG). This recognition highlights FIPOI’s sustained efforts in energy efficiency and sustainability. Since 2018, FIPOI has saved over 1.2 gigawatt-hours of electricity through a series of impactful initiatives.

Food

Our exclusive catering partner has been awarded the ISO 14001 and “Fourchette Verte” labels, guaranteeing local, seasonal produce. It also holds the GRTA guarantee mark identifying agricultural products from the Geneva region. We recently opted to offer glass bottles and reduce PET overall for conferences taking place at one of our five venues.

Mobility

Some of the FIPOI’s facilities are equipped with electric vehicle charging stations, enabling employees who own electric vehicles to commute to work and charge onsite.

Incentive for soft mobility through a financial contribution towards the purchase by employees of an electric bicycle or a public transport card.

We collaborate with a cab company that exclusively reserves hybrid or electric vehicles rather than internal combustion engines.

Sustainable IT

The statement on the “Responsabilité numérique d’entreprise” (RNE) has been written.

The ICT team has discussed the 48 objectives and assigned each of them to a responsible person, as per the RACI definition.

We have set the key performance indicator (KPI) structure and we have created the reporting model document.

Waste management

The FIPO uses biodegradable cups.

FIPOI also manages the Geneva International Conference Centre (CICG) and the Varembé Conference Centre (CCV), whose carbon footprint was measured. It amounted to 734.9 tCO2 for the year 2022.

Contribution to climate action

The European Broadcasting Union is actively involved in supporting its member organizations in their climate initiatives. They continuously facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices both within member organizations and across relevant expert communities affiliated with the European Broadcasting Union. Over the past year, they have documented and shared key findings through various reports, including ‘Climate Journalism That Works – Bridging Knowledge and Impact’, ‘Promoting Environmental Sustainability in Public Service Media: Corporate Investments’, ‘Implementing Sustainable Practices in Cloud Service Procurement’, and ‘Mapping Out Public Service Media’s Role in Sustainability’.

The European Broadcasting Union’s Sustainability Working Group has been dedicated to developing robust sustainability reporting standards aligned with guidelines from the European Union and the UN Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). Additionally, they have organized numerous industry-wide events, such as collaborative workshops with the European Broadcasting Union’s AI and Data Initiative, and the annual Sustainability Summit, to foster broader engagement and knowledge sharing within the sector.

The EBU are reducing its energy footprint by taking the following steps:
• Upgrading the bulbs in the buildings to LED in the toilets, stairs (1 building) and in some technical rooms.
• Upgraded the underground parking lot to LED, 100%.
• Automatic detection of presence to turn the lights on and off.
• We are researching the use of solar panels.
• We have communication campaigns with our employees on how to reduce energy use, e.g. the temperature is reduced at certain times of the year, take the stairs rather than the lifts, etc.

Food

• The EBU has water fountains connected to the water mains rather than water bottles.
• The coffee machines are used with the water heated from the mains and the coffee are the beans which the machine grinds, rather than little pots.
• We have replaced the disposable cups to paper rather than single use plastic.
• The canteen always has a vegetarian option every day.
• The EBU has a food vending machine, where the containers for the main meals are glass and are plastic free.

Mobility

• Outdoor bike shelters.
• Charging station for electric bikes in the parking lot.
• Car-sharing platform under study.
• 10% of EBU employees come to work by bike

Sustainable IT

• Reducing the footprint of our current Datacenter, therefore reduce dramatically the electricity consumptions.
• Move more servers to the Cloud base service provider that are using green energy in their own Datacenter, such as Microsoft.
• Recycle all IT devices with minimum 1-2 years longer before replacing with the new device, such as laptops and mobile phones.
• We sell back all the old devices to another service provider who will be able to re-use them for other purpose.
• We use green providers as much as possible to get our IT services and equipment. For example, Apple’s iPhone with their material recycle programs and their 2030 carbon neutral, and their datacenters/Apple stores are fully now running on green energy.

Waste management

• We separate our waste – paper, aluminium, batteries, PET, glass, electronic devices and organic waste. The different types of waste are taken by different organisations to recycle where possible.
• We have a project to create new dispose area for the new paper cups, so that they are included in the paper waste.

Contribution to climate action

A member of the 2050Today initiative since 2021, the Diplomatic Club of Geneva is actively engaged in the fight against climate change, with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Every day, both in its operations and at its events, it strives to act responsibly and concretely towards our planet.

From 2021 onwards, actions have been taken to avoid food waste at events and give priority to local and seasonal produce.

The Club is also committed to raising awareness among its members of the importance of climate change. Several events have been organized, covering topics such as ocean protection and highlighting innovative projects such as 2050Today initiative and GeniLac site.

Lastly, at the end of 2022, the Club launched an innovative initiative to finance a local ecological project each year, up to the amount of its carbon footprint.

2023: Planting of a mini-orchard and construction of a dry hedge next to the Club’s offices at Domaine La Pastorale
2024: Two beehives were adopted in Satigny in collaboration with the Apidae association, contributing to bee conservation. The first jars of honey were harvested in autumn, illustrating the tangible impact of this initiative on biodiversity

Food

Since 2021, the Diplomatic Club has been striving to reduce the amount of food served during cocktails as much as possible to minimize food waste, and to offer local and seasonal food.

Achievements

2022: Cocktails with 50% vegetarian items (excluding sweet items).
2022: 30% reduction in the number of cocktail pieces per person.

The Diplomatic Club is committed to reducing and recycling its waste, while favoring the use of eco-responsible materials.

Contribution to climate action

The CAGI is strongly committed to climate action at the local level and is actively working towards reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 5% each year.

Thematic actions

Energy

The CAGI relocated to the Maison de Maître, which has undergone complete renovation. This means that CAGI activities can now take place in a building that is better insulated and consumes less energy compared to its previous location, thus reducing its environmental impact.

Mobility

Compared to 2021, more CAGI employees used soft mobility in 2022. The CAGI also encourages the international Geneva to use the public transport options available, as well at the soft mobility options. On the CAGI website there are also further information on how to use the local bike sharing options.

Waste management

CAGI has drastically reduced its paper use by implementing a new concept which allows newly arrived people (diplomats, civil servants, NGO employees, HUG and UNGE PhD students) to learn about us without sending all the usual documentation. We went from 110g to 5g of paper mailed per person, with 1,500 people per year receiving these shipments.

Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain (i.e. purchased good or services, business travel, employee commuting).

The 2050Today carbon footprint takes into account the reported emissions generated by the activities of the institution over one year and is divided by categories:

Energy and water

Mobility

It takes into consideration business travels and commuting (on a survey basis).

Food

The CO2 impact of food includes the catering of the institution and individual consumption (on a survey basis) during working hours.

Purchased goods

The perimeter of purchased goods is set to a list of new office equipment, new mobility equipment (vehicles) and construction materials.

Waste

To ensure the reliability, the accuracy and a recurrent updating of the carbon footprint assessment, 2050Today is advised by an international Carbon Footprint Scientific Committee.
