Project NetZeroEvent

Reducing the environmental impact of mobility related to
international events and conferences in Geneva

Every year, the canton of Geneva hosts a large number of international events organised by various institutional and economic actors. The environmental impact of these events is little known and rarely analysed. However, we do know that travel by external participants accounts for the majority of the impact in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, due to emissions linked to air travel to these events. There is currently very little accurate data on this travel, which is not systematically recorded by conference organisers.

NetZeroEvent: Measuring and reducing the impact of mobility

The Canton of Geneva has set ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 2050. A potential reduction in the impact of international events organised in Geneva could play an important role in achieving these targets.

The NetZeroEvent project aims to analyse the mobility of participants at international conferences and its impact in terms of GHG emissions, and to propose ways of substantially reducing emissions.

The project aims to analyse different types of events, including those organised by the University of Geneva, Geneva-based international organisations and professional conferences supported by Geneva Tourism.

The project focuses on the travel of participants attending a conference in Geneva and their choice of transport in Geneva during their stay. The project also aims to collect other information related to conferences in order to compare the impact of transport with other sources of emissions linked to the organisation of conferences (such as food or energy related to the building).

The NetZeroEvent project approach

The main question NetZeroEvent seeks to answer:
How can we quantify the climate impact of travel by external participants to international conferences held in Geneva?

The following secondary questions define the scope of the project more precisely:

  • What are the conference organisation practices in Geneva’s various economic sectors (UNIGE, international organisations and Geneva Tourism)?
  • Quelles sont les mesures déjà mises en oeuvre par les institutions organisatrices ?
  • What are the practices related to the mobility of participants at international conferences in Geneva (estimation of modal shares in terms of number of trips and kilometres travelled) and what impact do they have in terms of CO₂ emissions?
  • Can we estimate the overall impact of conferences in Geneva based on the sample studied, taking into account the total number of conferences and participants per partner organisation and per type of event?
  • Based on this assessment, what recommendations can be made depending on the type of organisation or conference, and what potential for reducing emissions could these measures represent?

Recommendations and best practices

Based on the project results, recommendations will be proposed and discussed with conference organisers and key stakeholders during a focus group. The aim is to reduce the carbon impact of conferences held in Geneva by capitalising on potential windfall effects — particularly the savings generated — while ensuring the continuity and smooth coordination of activities.

This approach will take full account of the local and international context, as well as the specific characteristics of Greater Geneva.
