Footprint and emissions by scope

2050Today’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions measurement methodology follows the GHG Protocol. The Protocol provides standards and guidance for organizations to measure and manage climate-warming emissions. It was created in 1998 through a partnership between the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

According to the GHG Protocol, the distribution of emissions is done by scopes:

Scope 1 represents direct emissions linked to the consumption of fossil fuels.

Scope 2 represents indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling consumed by the reporting company.

Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain (i.e. purchased good or services, business travel, employee commuting).

The 2050Today carbon footprint takes into account the reported emissions generated by the activities of the institution over one year and is divided by categories:

Energy and water

It takes into account the amount of the consumed electricity produced and purchased by the institution. The energy consumed to heat and/or cool the institution’s building area and the consumed water are included as well.

Mobility

It takes into consideration business travels and commuting (on a survey basis).

Food

The CO2 impact of food includes the catering of the institution and individual consumption (on a survey basis) during working hours.

Purchased goods

The perimeter of purchased goods is set to a list of new office equipment, new mobility equipment (vehicles) and construction materials.

Waste

The perimeter of the waste inventory is set to waste production from facilities and internal operations of the institution

It has to be noted that the collected data of the 2050Today members resulting in each carbon footprint are not yet fully standardized and might not be entirely complete. Data collection is being progressively harmonized and improved. Therefore, direct comparisons between tCO2 / employee among institutions – be it in general or per sector – are not yet possible nor relevant.

To ensure the reliability, the accuracy and a recurrent updating of the carbon footprint assessment, 2050Today is advised by an international Carbon Footprint Scientific Committee.

In this context, we have implemented several initiatives within our operations aimed at reducing our ecological footprint and promoting more responsible consumption.

Thematic actions

Biodiversity

A refuge for wildlife has been set up near our Chancellery, in order to facilitate their habitats and movements.

Energy

We have installed a 90 kWh solar panel system, enabling self-consumption. This represents approximately 30% of our annual energy consumption, thus helping to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Also keen to limit the environmental impact of our business, we have replaced all of our thermal gardening equipment (lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers) with 100% electric models, in order to reduce noise pollution and our polluting gas emissions.

Mobility

We have also taken steps to encourage sustainable mobility within our company. As a first step, we installed four electric vehicle charging stations, allowing our employees and partners to charge their vehicles on site. Recognizing the increasing demand for charging solutions, we plan to double this capacity soon to meet a growing need and further encourage the adoption of electric vehicles within our team. As part of our vehicle fleet, we have acquired a 100% electric vehicle for staff transportation, a greener solution that helps reduce CO2 emissions from our business travel. In addition, we are encouraging soft mobility by providing our employees with two electric bicycles for their business trips, thus reducing the use of polluting vehicles.

Waste management

Waste management plays a central role in our environmental approach. We have introduced recycling bins, and each employee is responsible for sorting their own office waste (organic waste, plastic, paper, cardboard, aluminum, etc.), thus helping to reduce waste sent to landfill.

Contribution to climate action

The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Morocco is encouraged that more than 60 institutions (permanent Missions, international Organizations and civil entities) based in international Geneva have committed to the climate initiative from 2050Today. Local climate measures are important to ensure the impact of our actions and to measure the action results. In this perspective, contributions to the promotion and protection of a healthy and sustainable environment in a context marked by global warming and the growing threat of biodiversity loss is a must.

The permanent mission of the Kingdom of Morocco is one of the initiating institutions of 2050Today.

This Mission is committed to achieving the common goal of 2050Today: reducing CO2 emissions by 2030, to reach the target of 0 net emissions by 2050 and evaluating the results annually.

Thematic actions

Energy

Concerning the energy consumption, an action plan has been implemented to raise staff awareness about consuming responsibly. We have indicated on this plan, some examples to reduce energy consumption like turning off computers and lights before any definitive exit.

Food

As part of its Green and Sustainable Mission program, the Mission of Morocco has developed an internal food guideline to inform and raise awareness among its staff about the commitment to reducing C02 emissions. This program is being carried out to rethink eating habits during office hours and to integrate greener eating patterns.

The idea promotes food patterns for a clean, healthy and sustainable environment: Firstly, focusing on reducing meat consumption during office lunches. The carbon footprint of meat is the highest amongst all nutrition groups. The production of one kg of beef can emit up to 60 kg of greenhouse gases, whereas peas emit only 1 kg of CO2 emissions. Animal products in particular, such as meat and dairy products, have a large carbon footprint not only because of their methane (through fermentation and digestion) and nitrous oxide emissions but also because of their more complex production processes. If the products are additionally sold on the international market, the emission balance of each product increases further due to the transport routes.

So eating seasonally comes with several benefits:

  • Better for the health
  • Tasty and fresh
  • Less expensive
  • Favouring short circuits, i.e. local products
  • Reduced environmental impact
  • Favours new culinary discoveries

Mobility

Regarding mobility, awareness has been raised among staff to use public transport and implement car sharing.

Sustainable IT

This Mission ensures that its electronic tools are repaired to avoid any waste.

Waste management

This Mission implemented the selective sorting of waste. Moreover, all staff take care to ensure that they consume paper reasonably.

Contribution to climate action

The Swiss Foreign Affairs uses the term “sustainable embassies” under which to share sustainable practices for the Swiss diplomatic outposts. The term collects a mean to a holistic optimisation of Swiss embassies in the three dimensions of sustainability (environment, economy and society). In the context of this project, measures are presented in particular in the environmental dimension, specifically in the areas of energy and resource efficiency, renewable energies, climate protection, promotion of biodiversity and environmentally conscious construction. Thematic actions

Energy

The Permanent Mission of Switzerland integrates the importance of reducing the carbon footprint of its operations in all areas of its work. Various measures are therefore implemented to ensure positive impacts in reducing CO2 emissions. With the support of the Federal Office for Buildings and Logistics, the buildings of the Swiss foreign affairs in Switzerland and abroad comply with the “Swiss Sustainable Construction Standards”.

Food

Vegetarian menus and the use of local and seasonal products are promoted at the Mission’s receptions and events. The use of plastic bottles has been reduced to a minimum, in favour of glass and cardboard recipients. Mission staff are also encouraged to adopt an emission-reducing practice for individual consumption during working hours.

Mobility

The Mission promotes the use of soft mobility for urban travel, such as public transport, bicycles, electric bikes and walking. Electric bicycles are provided for business use. With the return to a normalised situation, teleworking will continue to be implemented on a part-time basis to reduce commuting. For participation in events abroad, the Mission asks its members to take into consideration the impact of CO2 emissions. In line with the flight reduction policy of the Swiss Federal Administration, the use of the train is prioritized when travelling in Europe.

In addition, the Swiss government encourages all their employees in Switzerland to participate in the nationwide “Bike to Work” campaign. Employees of the Federal Administration are motivated to use their bicycles for commuting to work over a period of several weeks during the challenge. By shifting to an environmentally friendly means of transport, the environmental impact of mobility is also reduced.

Sustainable IT

The Swiss government published guidelines according to which IT and electronic appliances should be purchased. Further guidelines outline how to charge the personal computers for a longer lifetime of the batteries and lower electricity consumption. Specific guidelines can be found on suisseenergie.ch

Waste management

The Mission has set up sorting centres to ensure better recycling and reduce the proportion of waste. All members of staff are encouraged to keep printing to a minimum and to send and receive documents electronically.

Footprint and emissions by scope

2050Today’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions measurement methodology follows the GHG Protocol. The Protocol provides standards and guidance for organizations to measure and manage climate-warming emissions. It was created in 1998 through a partnership between the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

According to the GHG Protocol, the distribution of emissions is done by scopes:

Scope 1 represents direct emissions linked to the consumption of fossil fuels.

Scope 2 represents indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling consumed by the reporting company.

Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain (i.e. purchased good or services, business travel, employee commuting).

The 2050Today carbon footprint takes into account the reported emissions generated by the activities of the institution over one year and is divided by categories:

Energy and water

It takes into account the amount of the consumed electricity produced and purchased by the institution. The energy consumed to heat and/or cool the institution’s building area and the consumed water are included as well.

Mobility

It takes into consideration business travels and commuting (on a survey basis).

Food

The CO2 impact of food includes the catering of the institution and individual consumption (on a survey basis) during working hours.

Purchased goods

The perimeter of purchased goods is set to a list of new office equipment, new mobility equipment (vehicles) and construction materials.

Waste

The perimeter of the waste inventory is set to waste production from facilities and internal operations of the institution

It has to be noted that the collected data of the 2050Today members resulting in each carbon footprint are not yet fully standardized and might not be entirely complete. Data collection is being progressively harmonized and improved. Therefore, direct comparisons between tCO2 / employee among institutions – be it in general or per sector – are not yet possible nor relevant.

Contribution to climate action

The Permanent mission of Norway in Geneva shares guidelines on sustainable office practices with all the employees. The guidelines and recommendations are reviewed annually. This office policy was initiated in 2012.

Thematic actions

Energy

Energy efficient lightbulbs such as LEDs, were introduced in the office in 2013, to replace fluorescent and halogen lighting.
The employees of the mission are encouraged turn off lights when leaving the office to save energy, and to only run the dishwasher when it is full.

Food

The mission encourages to purchase sustainable food for meetings and events. Organic/bio locally produced wine, and vegan or vegetarian menus at selected events (increasingly so). Catering services are also expected to be using local products. The mission asks for local products and ask all caterers to use reusable items (to avoid one-off, plastic usage).

Mobility

The Permanent Mission of Norway encourages its employees to think about their mobility in a sustainable way and it has had a great effect on the choice of transport mode amongst the mission’s staff.

Some of the policies include:

  • Walk when the meeting is close by
  • Use shared bikes provided by the mission
  • Use carpooling if several people from the mission need to attend the same meeting

Additionally, the residences were equipped with home fast charging points for electric vehicles.

Sustainable IT

Employees encouraged to enable power saver features on computers and electronical-equipment to reduce power consumption as well as to unplug the devices which are not in use.

Waste management

The Permanent Mission of Norway outlines the following policies to take into account waste management:

Plastic-bottled water was replaced with tap water in reusable glass bottles (using Geneva “Eau-de Geneve” glass ‘carafes’ from Industrial Services of Geneva (LSIG). Change implemented in 2018 at the Mission. Also applies when organising events at external venues such as at the UN or hotels.

Furthermore the mission has:

  • Eliminated use of disposable products in staff kitchen and residence – including plates, cups and utensils.
  • Implemented paper, plastic and biowaste recycling at the office and residences
  • Replaced all cleaning products with a bio version without toxic chemicals.
  • Encouraged employees to print only if absolutely necessary and to print double-sided.
  • Replaced multifunction copy machines by smaller, more economic machines.

Upon request from Permanent Mission of Norway to UNOG’s Official Document System (ODS) in 2011, the Permanent Mission of Norway no longer receives printed material and official documentation (pigeon hole delivery), when such is available electronically. Upon request from Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oslo in 2019 cancellation of all printed material and official documentation deliveries sent to MFA Norway from UN/OHCHR/UNHCR Geneva when such is available electronically.

Staff engagements:

Organised a staff visit of the La Step – Bois-de-Bay treatment plant, and learning how they are treating Geneva’s wastewater and preserving quality of the water discharged in the Rhône.

Used the annual welfare day for a walk through the woods, close to the mission, while cleaning up all trash found during the walk.

Staff participates in local clean-up ‘actions’ such as, Net’Léman and Genève Action Lac proper

The Permanent Mission of Mexico is strongly committed to climate action and aims to reduce its emissions. By taking part in the 2050Today initiative, the Permanent Mission of Mexico intends to identify and implement solutions to reduce its impact on the environment, alongside the other institutions of international Geneva.

 

2050Today Award winner

In 2025, the Permanent Mission of Mexico won the 2050Today “Engagement” Award. This award highlights a creative and innovative project aimed at promoting and supporting climate action through collective engagement. The Permanent mission of Mexico developped the Best Practices Handbook with Practical Tips for Being Sustainable at Work – a key component of the communication and training pillar of the Environmental Action Plan of the Permanent Mission of Mexico. Contribution to climate action

Since April 2019, the Permanent Representation of France to the United Nations in Geneva and international organizations in Switzerland has been committed to reducing its environmental impact as part of the “Green Embassy” project.

Launched in 2015 in view of COP21, the “Green Embassy” project is a comprehensive and progressive approach to reducing the environmental footprint of French diplomatic representations abroad. France aims to strengthen its commitment to sustainable development, showcase French expertise through the diplomatic network, improve the management and performance of posts, achieve cost savings, and strive for carbon neutrality.

The challenges are numerous:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Managing energy and water consumption
  • Promoting renewable energy
  • Encouraging more sustainable purchasing
  • Promoting sustainable mobility
  • Protecting biodiversity and the environment
  • Reducing and sorting waste
  • Raising awareness internally and externally about sustainable development

 

The Permanent Mission of France is fully committed to sustainable development. To address these significant challenges, permanent representations in Geneva conducted an environmental impact assessment in 2019. Conducted by engineers, this assessment identified areas where greater eco-responsibility is necessary and feasible. Based on this precise and detailed assessment of their strengths and weaknesses in terms of sustainable development, permanent representations developed an action plan defining strategies and measures to be implemented in the short, medium, and long terms to reduce their environmental impact across five areas: energy, water, mobility, procurement, and waste.

As a result, eight actions have been established:

  • Reducing carbon footprint in terms of electricity consumption;
  • Optimizing heating efficiency and improving building insulation;
  • Reducing water consumption and the carbon impact generated by it;
  • Promoting more ecological modes of transportation;
  • Achieving better control and management of waste produced;
  • Adopting a sustainable and eco-responsible purchasing strategy;
  • Enhancing biodiversity and better managing green spaces;
  • Raising awareness among staff about eco-responsible practices.

 

Finally, the Permanent Representations of France in Geneva have joined the “2050 Today” network, which commits the international Geneva to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through quantifiable monitoring of the efforts made by diplomatic missions to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Contribution to climate action

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ sustainability strategy was launched on 26th November 2019. The MFAs’ vision is to become one of the most sustainable foreign services in the world.

This is a very ambitious goal, which includes not only a significant reduction of our carbon footprint, but also includes an aim to become one of the best public workplace in Denmark and in our Foreign Service and to ensure that sustainability guides our everyday choices at home as well as abroad.

The Permanent Mission of Denmark in Geneva is fully aligning itself with the strategy.

Thematic actions

Biodiversity

The Mission plans to aim for increased greening of the terrace at the Mission.

Energy

In 2019 the Permanent Mission of Denmark subscribed to Vitale Vert electricity and water (40%) by SIG. Vitale Vert electricity is sourced from 100% renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric, wind and solar power. The Mission has chosen this option in order to reduce carbon footprint, to contribute to sustainable energy production, and to support clean energy initiatives.

In 2023 a heating pump and solar panels were installed in the Ambassador’s residence in order to reduce carbon emissions.

The Mission is using low-energy consuming LED light bulb and motion sensors to automatically turn lights on and off. We are raising awareness among employees about responsible energypractices such as turning off lights, computers and printers when not in use, and adjusting heating temperatures. In order to remind employees about energy conservation practices, notices aimed at raising awareness are strategically placed at key locations. We aim to send periodic reminder to staff of the basic principles of “A sustainable day at work”.

Food

When catering the Mission aims to use locally produced food which typically is cheaper, fresher and contains less additives or preservatives. Using locally produced food, our events supports the local economy by supporting the local producers and thereby local employment. We always provide vegetarian and vegan options and reduce food waste by using left-overs and by limiting the use of buffets –when possible.

In order to host sustainable events the Mission uses the MFA’s “checklist for a “sustainable event” taking into consideration the following:

• Food and drinks
• Handouts and decoration
• Transport and accommodation
• Waste and leftovers
• Paper
• Sustainable flowers/plants
• Attention signs regarding the focus of sustainability
• Avoid bottled water and using tap water instead.

Regarding drinking water, we have phased out the use of plastic bottles or water fountains with plastic containers, opting instead for tap water. As for coffee we have shifted away from using capsule coffee machines in favour of whole bean coffee.

Mobility

In an effort to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental responsibility, the Mission has opted to purchase one fully electric car (2022) for the use of the HoM and one hybrid vehicle (2019) as the official Mission car. These mobility choices underline the Mission’s dedication in taken proactive steps in combatting climate change and embracing sustainable practices.

The Mission has purchased four electrical bikes for the convenient use of its employees when commuting to meetings. This initiative not only promotes a healthier climate but also facilitates a green transportation option.

The Mission follows the MFA’ sustainable travel rules taking the following Sustainable considerations before booking a travel:

1. Can it be handled virtually?
2. Can mutual purposes be integrated into the travel, to reduce future travels?
3. How many people need to be travelling? (minimize the number)
4. Can the final destination be reached by train (or bus) within 6 hours of travel time?
5. How early can the travel be planned and booked? (Early planning reduces costs).

The Mission always choose the most climate-friendly mode of transport (bus, train or car rather than flying) as long as additional costs in terms of time and expenses for the trip are reasonable.

Sustainable IT

We aim:
• To minimize paper waste, use your devices –phones tablet and PC’s –to take notes, pull up documents and give presentations on the TV screen
• To reduce incoming and outgoing mail – as much as possible should be emailed (scan incoming mail)
• To recycle IT equipment
• To use “share files” and cloud computing options when possible
• To use IT eco-friendly solutions

Waste management

The Mission has implemented waste sorting practices, in line with the standards established in the canton of Geneva. To reduce paper consumption we have embraced paperless processes and meetings, favoring the use of digital tools. We use eco-friendly cleaning products.
